Arlington Virginia Ranked Northern Virginia’s Most Walkable City

There is no denying that Arlington, Virginia is an amazing place to live!  From our spectacular schools, amazing restaurants, stellar parks and cute boutiques, to easy access to the jobs, cultural events and entertainment in Washington, DC – the Arlington Virginia lifestyle is easy to love. Redfin, the Seattle-based real estate brokerage now gives us another reason to love living here: Arlington Virginia Ranked Northern Virginia’s Most Walkable City.

Enjoy a Car-less lifestyle

Walk Score, a Redfin company, recently released it’s 2015 ranking of the most walkable mid-sized U.S. cities with populations between 200,000 and 300,000 and Arlington Virginia came in 3rd place! The Walk Score “incorporates walking routes, depth of choice, pedestrian-friendliness, population and neighborhood data” to see how easy it is to get to the places you want to go from your home without a car.  The top score is 100, so the closer a community rates to 100, the more likely it is you’ll be able to enjoy a car-less lifestyle. Arlington Virginia’s Walk Score was tabulated at 67.1. For some perspective, the top two spots in the rankings were occupied by two New Jersey cities: Newark (77.8) and Jersey City (84.4).

Why Walk Score matters?

Popular opinion is that you have to live in a major city in order to enjoy what Redfin calls a “walkable lifestyle,” but what these smaller cities  show is that you can live in a mid-sized city (like Arlington) and reap the benefits of leaving the car in the garage:

• Saving money on gas
• Reducing your emissions impact on the environment
• Walking to restaurants, the grocery store, farmer’s market, happy hour, etc.
• Living close to green spaces, sports fields and other recreational opportunities
• Interacting with neighbors along the way to and from your destination
